It all depends on the exact situation but if it were me and I definitely needed to get it home, I'd do the gasket and hose clamps, drive slowly, check it every few miles, keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge and carry a couple of gallons of oil in the trunk.
I wouldn't try replacement in the parking lot.
