Trying to think of things that would occur suddenly, causing a lot of smoke yet leaving the car drivable. Has this problem affected oil consumption and if so can you give us some numbers (miles per quart)?
The later 60x engines are not supposed to have the head or head gasket problems of the 603 but you could have a head gasket failure or a cracked head such that a cylinder is sucking in oil from a passage to the head. A cracked ring would also cause smoking but probably not as much as you are seeing (pictures?).
