I have already done the resolder trick a couple of years ago, but now apparently with removing it and reinstalling it several times (for various other projects) the primary selector buttons (Defrost, Upper vents, Bi-level, etc) won't push each other out anymore. When the defrost button is depressed now, for example, it does not release the adjacent buttons (pop them back out) and the off button won't stay depressed at all (nor eject the other buttons).
Any ideas from anyone before I take the plunge? I don't want to try junk parts and take the chance that they won't work properly either. I don't have a problem attempting to repair, but I don't see how to enter the actual button assembly without unsoldering the components. I have opened the unit as far as possible without unsoldering the PC boards that sandwich the button assemblies.

I recently spent a considerable amount of time working on my CCU...I did pretty much the same things you did, with various degrees of success. In the end, it was taking a TON of time, and was very frustrating...plus, living in Michigan, it was getting cold quickly.
All that added up to me buying a refurb CCU from a local supplier - I installed that thing IN THE PARKING LOT because I was so excited to have heat...it clicked on immediately, along with a giant smile on my face. Totally worth it.
Buy the "new" CCU...I'm sure you could fiddle with that old one for weeks (as I did), but it will save you a lot of headache to just buy it.
Just my two cents....
