In the pre 1990's "D" means sedan diesel, "CD" means coupe diesel, "SD" means big body sedan diesel, "TD" means touring diesel- ie wagon, "GD" means G-wagon. Your engine came out of a "SD" if it was out of a 80-81 sedan, as the "SD" had a turbo (OM617-95X) from 78-85 in two different chassis (w116 and w126). Sedans in the smaller chassis (w123) did not get a turbo engine until 1982.
