I don't know the make or age of your washer, but I'll try (have not been in that business for some 20 years) .

The older Sears Kenmore and Whirlpool washers have a pair of solenoids that control the gear box(non reversible motor) (one range for spin and the other for agitate), check for broken wires or a bad solenoid as the solenoid arrangement is subject to quite a bit of movement. You may also want to check the pump, if it is locked up due to an ingested sock, it could be tripping the thermal protection switch on the motor (you would probably be smelling rubber though) On other makes, GE, Speed Queen, Maytag, etc, they use a reversible motor, again check the leads going to the motor as well as the "motor switch" .

If you are really lucky, it could be something as simple as a "lid switch" or the associated wiring preventing the spin cycle from occurring. On most models you can pop the lid by inserting a putty knife into the recesses about 2-4 inches inboard from either front corner, then lift the lid.

Please unplug the machine before trying any of the before mentioned steps.
