Pretty sure that the problem is a replaceable part in the shifter called the range recognition switch. Had a number of these fail. Not alot of them failing lately, but it sure does sound like the problem we had with them. Part isn't too expensive, but I'd kinda tend to recommend the dealer does it. The shifter assembly needs to come apart, gets a little tricky.
