It all depends on the condition of the car you buy, and how much effort you put into keeping it in good shape. If you do that then its only an occasional repair. In fact, I've gone over a year now with no major maintenance on my 300SD....overall they are not that hard to keep going if you know what your doing. Some years there will be more repairs than others. For instance, I've spent several evenings in the past couple months sorting out issues with our new 300E....but it didn't really cost much...less than$400 in parts, and now I've got it pretty much sorted out and running great. The diesels are even easier. The largest repairs I've done in the past year on any of them was a couple starters and valve adjustments/glow plugs/general fluid changes and such.
