I went to start the Diesel this morning and I had the following problems
first the starter would not engage the ring gear. It just spun at high speed. I let it run for about five seconds and it finally engaged. Then once the car started, the starter would not stop running! I turned off the key and the starter disengaged (whew!) but kept running. I had to disconnect the battery to turn it off. Once it was off, if I reconnected the battery the starter would run, but not engage. My question is are there solenoids available for this starter or do I have to replace the whole thing? The starter motor runs fine.
Also has anybody heard of the solenoid sticking in the run position? It seems to me that once you turn the key away from the 'start' position the relay should no longer be energized and the motor should stop. What could keep it running?
Does anybody have a spare 300SDL starter they could sell me? I have a spare OM617 starter, but it is different than the one on the OM603
