Maybe both pumps deliver #1 diesel but the "winterized" stuff has been treated to some fuel conditioner like Redline DFC, Power Service winter blend or Stanadyne, hence the nickel a gallon more?
Actually it was WI, but only about 30 miles into it.

My guess is that many people in the country (where the station was located) use diesel as fuel for burning in heaters. So they can sell straight #2 a bit cheaper than blended as people that use it for heating use that.

But I could be wrong and your statment could be correct. I should have asked them at the counter.
