Because of the ice on the driveway I decided to try the FixItAgainTony or FIAT method on my starter. I took a wooden shovel handle and a hammer and gave the solenoid a few whacks. I reconnected the battery and lo and behold the starter behaved properly. Hopefully it will last a few days until I can get a new one and the driveway and lawn melt.
