Samba, I just did this procedure a few weeks ago on my 240. I followed that dieselgiant guide and it all worked out for me. When you have your speedo out and the headset removed, turn the brass gear by hand UNTIL the trip counts to at least 100 miles. This will test that the metal gear is not slipping on the shaft when its having to turn the heavy loads. Also, when putting the shaft back through the odo numbers, be sure that it is really in there. If it is out too much the plastic/nylon screw type gear will not turn it. Be sure to visually inspect those plastic gears to make sure they are in contact with each other and that they aren't cracked or broken.
