I think it is worth it to spend a little time in the warm store and let the test it.
At least you will not be wasting your time installing a dead Starter.
Also if you know it tested OK in the store and it does not work on your car it could also indicate that you have another Electrical problem.
In short having the Starter tested gives you more information to work with as does having the old Starter tested.
