The beauty, and the curse of American cars during this era was the available options list. You could order a true muscle car right off the options list. Add the biggest engine to the lightest body, high (numerical) locking differential, and delete all the stuff that added weight--heater, radio, etc. It would go extremely fast in a straight line--a 1/4 mile straight line to be exact.
Or you could ( for Mustang buyers) tick off the H.O. small block engine, handling package, and disc brake options and have a fairly good handling, fast car.
Or you could equip it like a mini Limo with all the posh seats, A/C and 8 track players to give it the "luxury" appeal.
