Funny you should mention, you sorta hit the nail on the head. During Vietnam, we were in the midst of the most amazing economic boom in history, and we had way cheap oil, plentifully, from Iran for starters. That's why (IMHO) we weren't utterly ruined by throwing nearly $1 trillion, inflation adjusted, down a sinkhole.

But plenty on the military right have had a hard-on since Vietnam to prove that we win any and every war that we (some) see fit to launch. And a reluctance to change course in the midst of such a thing so as to not repeat the "horrible mistake" of abandoning Vietnam. From this, we have jumped into the historical tar baby/hornets nest combo (Afghanistan, where empires go to die) and Iraq which is about the same. OBL has to be grinning broadly, as we are fulfilling his grand strategy of seeing us bankrupt ourselves in ruinous war and occupation like the Russkies did.

You seem to think that error has no penalty. It does.
