If it is anything like the W201, this can be caused by a vacuum line disconnection or leaking. I have had this problem a couple of times; once when a brown vac line on the driver's side fender well was disconnected and once when the vac line to the trans on the vac amplifier was disconnected. I would suspect something similar on your car.
