Squirrels and other rodents are prey. Any smell strong enough to desensitize one of their defense mechanisms: their sense of smell, tends to discourage them. Mothballs are a commonly used odor to discourage mice and squirrels, just smells bad enough I don't want them near my car. Downy sheets are another thing lots of people use to keep rodents out of their cars/boats/RVs when stored.
