When you say distributor housing,are you referring to the o ring just above the gear on the distributor shaft ?? You'd have to pull the entire distributor to get access to it.
I tried a "generic" rubber ring but found it wasn't thick enough.Wound up getting the factory part for 3-4$
I had similar trouble with fouling on my early SL,but since getting a new o ring the problem has disappeared.
