If he did a cowl induction intake like figure 10-b found in this document http://aerade.cranfield.ac.uk/ara/1950/naca-report-982.pdf he would get most of the ram air benefit and only ingest 5% of the water of a normal ram air scoop. This is exactly what Mercedes did on my 85 cali 300SD.

Edit: What are you doing to draw vapors in from the crank case? (Note a vacuum (even a slight one) in the crank case helps power on the top end.
