Next time someone goes off about our 'conspicuous consumption' society I'll wave China's 100 million sqft of vacant office space in their face. 1/5 the commercial footage of Manhattan, vacant? Jeez.
When I was there in 2006, I saw where almost half the world's population of tower cranes (thirteen in one part of Xi'an alone; more than you could count in the haze of Beijing) had gone to, zillions of yards of concrete being poured and thousands of projects underway and wondered at the time how long it would take for that fiasco to cave in on itself.
I guess the answer is about 2.5 years.
