The jack straightens up as the car goes up. Once you get it up you can slide some jack stands under it, then relax the jack just enough to put weight on the jack stands. But you can take a floor jack and lift the car at the same point just move in a bit and get the jack in the middle of the door jamb. You should still use jack stands.
