It is a single run to the starter. Then there is another wire that runs from the starter to the junction box that ties in to the bolt on the starter. I just upgraded my alternator and added new wiring from the starter and alternator to the battery.

I put on a 48" 2 gauge cable with a regular terminal at one end and a battery connecter at the other end. I also left the old cable on so I have quite a bit of current going to the starter. Probably overkill.

The cable was a bit long but I don't think 36" would reach. I bought it for 9.99 at Autozone.
