If you decide to renew the filtering mesh then use the coarsest steel wool you can find. Use a fine grade mesh as the final "gate". Steel wool bits and engines are not a good mix.

If I remember correctly, there are either small "bumps" or a line on the actual oil bath area. If not, then fill the lower part to the first graduation level.
