If there were no sparks, it suggest a bad connection somewhere upstream possible at the battery itself. How did you use the two piece of wire? Normally it only requires a single piece of wire? It won't spark when put on the first terminal but almost certainly should spark on the second if current is present. It could also mean that the ground strap from the engine to the body has a poor connection.
