My 0.02, its a question of risk - I'm certain that a coil with a short can take out an EZL. So, if it's not too expensive (in the case of my 560SL, $90 vs thousands), I'd replace the coil(s) preventatively.
Of course, THEN you run the risk of DOA and "infant mortality", and the problem of "they don't make them the way they used to".
Keep in mind that supposedly, some EZL's on 300E's were constructed out of unobtanium and can't be had new at any price, or there is a long lead time. I worry that this will get worse.
