When we moved out to the country in the early 70's we had a huge hive in a hollow tree on the property line. Every year a 2nd queen with a cluster of workers(?)would come out and swarm on a near by tree. My father would call the local bee keeper and he would take them. They never bothered anyone. I believe the moron who moved next door went and killed them off fearing they would sting him. The pieces of honey comb left over were just dripping with honey. It had a very good flavor much different than store bought. The hive was close to a huge black berry patch where the bees would be all over the little white flowers. My father has a photo of our house around 1920 and in the side yard are half dozen bee boxes. I wonder if the hive in the tree were left over from that time or if the guy in 1920 started collect bees because of the hive.
