I agree with you, but the sad thing is, most of the people whose pits maul others (I am NOT talking about most people who own pits, by any means! ... just the ones who turn their dogs into violent animals) are the kind of people who have no idea what responsibility is. And even sadder, most of them don't really care that much if the dog ends up dead. They have the dog as a status symbol or to "protect" them. I think the pit bull breed's biggest problem is this: It happens to be very popular with the type of people who shouldn't own animals, any animals. Any breed that is popular with @$$holes is going to end up with a high attack rate. Yeah, when you read report after report, maybe you start to wonder. But anyone who's met a number of pit bulls would have to conclude that it isn't the breed that's the problem ... every pit bull I have ever met has been gentle and sweet, more so than most dogs. To be honest I grew up thinking all pit bulls were awful (that's what my mom always said) ... but meeting several of them changed my tune completely. So it's especially reprehensible that people manage to turn members of this very sweet breed into violent animals. It is unlucky for pit bulls that that element of society happens to like them. I guess the fortunate part is that there are an awful lot of good, responsible people who enjoy them and appreciate them ... and in some cases, give them a second chance. As said, every pit I've personally ever met falls into the latter category.
Just my 2 cents ... one thing that I find particularly depressing is that in cases of aggressive dogs, pit bulls or other, the dogs always end up paying for it. Not only in death, but through their whole life ... no animal should have to be raised in and live in a hateful environment. The owners rarely pay much more than a fine, maybe a little jail time in extreme cases. Why should the owners get so many chances when the dogs don't even get a second chance (or a first chance, really, for that matter)?
