It's hard to describe - but the "feet" of the holder go into the holes and then it slides sideways until one tab locks into a hole - I've removed them before by carefully prying above the tab with a thin small screwdriver while sliding it sideways.

And there are different foot configurations - I had one I pulled out of a w123 that would not fit the feet holes of the w124 - I have a nice triangle I wanted to mount in my 300E trunk and guess I will have to order it from the dealer cuz I haven't found one yet.
