I've had several 124s, gas and diesel, they each have their charm. Me? I'll give up the 100hp advantage of the M104 for a couple of MPG and the soft clatter of another diesel Mercedes even at the higher cost of diesel fuel. Besides, find a really straight diesel '95 with under 150k miles for under $6500 and you've found a bargain, and a non-turbo.
Most of the maintenance I've done on my Mercedes over the past 15years has been items other than the engines (brakes, CCU, antennas, suspension, etc.) and regular maintenance items on the engines. The diesels win on lower maintenance IMO, but not by a huge margin. I just like diesels, cars/trucks/motorcoaches/boats, I'm an addict.
