Welcome to the forum. Your engine is similar to my '87. Taking off the intake manifold makes changing glow plugs easier, especially the first time. The intake manifold gasket is metal and may not need to be replaced. If the EGR system is still active, the intake manifold will be all crudded up with a nasty mixture of oil and soot. It should be cleaned before returning it to the engine. Ordinary hand tools are all you need. Keep track of all the vacuum lines so you get them back where they belong.
