having a bad flex disc and a badly worn pinion gear allows too much pay in the drivetrain which means that individual components are dealing with higher levels of impact.

the effects are increased wear, possible driveline vibration, somewhat decreased drivability (due to all the slop in the drivetrain), and the possibility of breaking other components, sch as the tranny, driveshaft, ring gear, etc.
