One piece of info.: If you have a wireless card in your laptop, if you have a laptop, you can get a list of all the wifi cafes/retsurants and hotels on your route or away from home.
In most cases, you can go in, grab a cup of coffee, do all your PC stuff like e-mail etc and get back on the road and it doesn't overwhelm or cost.
Friends and I have done that.
But in Michigan, so many people are leaving/selling everything that two-year old laptops are selling for 75 bucks if you know where to look. I just bought one for my son to use on the road for college, he also has a desktop. If it's busted/stolen, it's a reasonable expense.
