I can tell you what I know about my 84 500SEL 126 body and it is probably the same for your 86 300E. You can't turn the steering wheel in relation to the steering shaft if you want your turn signals to cancel correctly. You will have to disconnect the steering shaft at the steering box and correct it there. Reinstall the centering bolt into the steering box to lock it. Remove the pinch bolt from the steering coupler at the box end. Remove the three box mounting bolts. Leave every thing else connected to the box. Slide the box off the coupling. The box won't fall off. Now turn the wheel to the straight position and lock it there some way. My Wife was kind enough to hold it for me. Slide the box back up onto the coupler. Replace all bolts, road test, and smile.

I really hope this works for you so you. It's not as hard as it sounds.
