Strage symptom - Is it the CCU or what?

I am having a typical W126 issue with my center vents. They intermittently stop working and air diverts to the defrosters. One would normally suspect the vacuum pod........

HOWEVER - here's the strange part, and what makes me think it might be the CCU.... The center vents will come back on immediately if I switch from AC to "EC" mode. It seems like the center vents are only intermittent when a button that allows the compressor to be on is selected.

So, is it the CCU or what? I just took the whole thing apart and re-soldered most of the joints, doesn't seem like much luck there. Could it be the pod actuator solenoid bank?

Ideas?

Thanks!
