93 300D 2.5 won't start. gp relay?

My 1993 300D 2.5 ran fine Friday. Got in Monday morning and turned the key and noticed the gp light never came on - uh oh! Tried to crank it and it turns over fine but did not fire. White smoke is trickling out the exhaust after a bit of cranking. I replaced all the gp's about 4 months ago so I suspect they are fine. I am suspecting the relay is bad. Is this a reasonable suspicion and if so would that prevent the rig from starting on a reasonably warm morning? Now, if so how do I test this thing. I know the older ones have a strip fuse but when I changed the gp's I noticed my box didn't have any externally (with cover off of course) visible fuse. Is there anything else that would cause these symptoms. Thoughts please!!!! Many thanks in advance.
