As a child, we lived virtually the same way for 4 years...in a 13' travel trailer. We had one Christmas where we didn't have money for gifts, so dad made everything we had. We were a much closer family back then, and I cherish the memories I have of that time.
This was during the recession in the early 1980's. Did my dad go to Uncle Sam and demand that we be given a home? No. He pulled himself up by his bootstraps and planted a rather large garden. We cleared the land in southern Ohio and later built a cabin. We didn't have running water at all, and was without electricity for 2 of those years. We started raising chicken to sell, then were able to afford hogs and calves for family consumption. We learned to live off the land and hunt for meat as well. We were survivors, and I thank my dad quite often for showing us how to really live.
I think this is a great opportunity for families to spend time together and re-connect with each other. It's a great time to be a family and build wonderful memories for your children.
