The function you choose with the buttons programs the vacuum switching devise, I had no bad switches, just elements that could not function due to ruptured diaphrams. In a proper system you should hear odd noises from inside the dash occasionally. That's the sound of the elements opening and closing various doors. At least it is on my car. It works fine since the replacement.
