Yes, the pre-2001 transmissions used a bushing instead of a bearing on the output shaft.

Many of them have failed (3-4%), MB won't do anything about the problem.

$3K isn't a terrible price for that repair.

Make sure to have the fluid changed every 30K miles from now on.
Also make sure they use the correct fluid as well.
