Much of this is due to marketing. Dodge consistantly markets it's vehicles to the more performance minded crowd. Ford and Chevy to the more practical bunch.
Now, that said, if you go to any truck meet you'll see a pretty equal share of crazies who own each brand. Although, I will say that the majority of the people who bring Dodges would be what some people would call "red necks".
In truth, for trucks in stock form, both gas and diesel trucks from all 3 brands are pretty competetive with one another from a performance standpoint.
Cummins has been around for the longest, is the easiest and cheapest to modify so naturally it has the lions share of the performance market.
The Powerstroke fuel system was never meant for performance and therefore, costs a bundle just to get it up to a point where it can generate higher HP numbers.
Chevy was behind the game for years through the late 90's but the Duramax has proven to be a great design and is extremely competetive.
