Happened across a book in the local used bookstore called The American Constitutions and Religion published in the 1930's. It contains the various articles pertaining to religion in the charters and constitutions of the US beginning with the colonial period up thru the 1930's dividing the historical moments into four main eras, the colonial, the revolutionary war, 1837-1876 and 1876-1930. A quick perusal seems to have revealed that South Carolina was the most religious of the US states throughout that period. I think it was the only state with an established religion. To be recognized as part of that established religion, a congregation needed to be Protestant and created by at least 15 males.
