I own (had several over the last 20 yrs) both the W123 and W126 diesels and have always got better mileage with the S class.
To me the 123 is like driving a tractor after spending some time in a 126.
Also, the '85 W126 will have a more efficient AC condensor. My black '85 300SD is like a meat locker running R134.
