On my 1990 300SEL W126, I also noticed that very cold air blows out of the rear vent at the bottom of the back of the console even with the vent supposedly closed. Not a good thing during the winters here on the East coast. I was going to try taking it apart, but apparently it does that by design even though we both wish it didn't.
