W124 Sunroof Weatherstripping

My sunroof admits a fair amount of water and one reason is that the weatherstripping was comprised of two pieces with a 3/8 inch gap between the rear piece and the forward piece. I have removed my headliner and of course when it rains water will pour in the gaps between the two pieces of weatherstripping.

I purchased a new seal from MB, 124 780 00 98 per the EPC a while ago and today took a stab at installing it. The first pic shows the two piece gasket after removal. The profile did not match the new MB part.

I installed the new one-piece gasket but of course now the sunroof will not raise all the way. If I push on the underside of the metal sunroof (headliner not installed) I can get it to close, but obviously this is not a solution.

The gasket is not symmetrical and the part that inserts into the body of the roof has many barbs on one side and one on the other. The gasket is also veloured although it has a bald section one side and not the other.

If anyone has done this repair I am wondering which side of the gasket is supposed to be "up" and whether there are any tricks to installation. Thanks
