Clunk when engaging gear stick shift

The 5-speed stick shift on my 190e has always been hard to operate smoothly - because when you let off the clutch more often than not it generates a loud thunk that goes down the lenght of the car. This sounds like the flex discs but I have had them checked and looked over them myself and they look okay, I even checked they were installed the right way.

But just recently I found I can replicate the issue by cruising along at about 10-20mph, with the car in neutral gear and the clutch pedal out (foot off the clutch). If I now try and engage a gear, without forcing it enough to do damage, the almighty clunk occurs every time, in any gear. I have never known other cars to do this if you try to engage gear without using the clutch pedal. So I just wander if this helps or if anyone knows what's going on here? Is it the synchromesh which comes into play when you do that? Or perhaps this is normal for a Mercedes 5-speed? Can anyone perhaps tell me?
