I don't recall this engine(M102) specifically; but usually you would need to loosen the tensioner securing/pivot bolt first, then use the adjuster to loosen or tighten the belt, and lastly retighten the securing/pivot bolt to lock things in place. It can happen that simply turning the adjuster without loosening the other bolt will damage parts of the tensioner apparatus unfortunately.
