Husqvarna bikes are very high performance racing bikes.

The break in is not because of poor machining of the cilinder (cilinder is not affected by breakin in, just pistons and rings), but of the very small tolerances.
These tolerances will allow for a couple af HP extra wich may be the difference btween winning and loosing a race.

The inside of the cylinder there is honed, so the oil sticks to it. If the tolerances are very small, the debris for breaking in the piston and rings fills up the hone. Te result is that the piston makes direct contact with ten cylinder wall and starts to oscillate. Just before an engine seizes you can hear a very high pitch noise from this oscillating. The same happens if the engine and oil overheats.

If you are able to stop the engine when this noise starts you will see a very shiny spot on the piston. If you sand it off and rehone the cylinder the engine will be ok.

Breaking in a high performance air-cooled engine is not easy, the engine should always be at operating temperature and lateral piston pressure should be raised very gently and oil frequently changed.

On their website they state” ATTENTION! The validity of the warranty is strictly related to the respect of the scheduled maintenance plan.”, so if you co worker did not follow is his claim makes little chance.

If he is into serious racing he will have to replace the cylinder piston and rings and start over.
If he uses it for recreation he is better of with a less sophisticated or more worn bike.
