DONE...
...and working. Ripped the ignition lock assembly out of the '85, put the new switch on, installed in the '87 with new cylinder -works like new!
The dash doesn't have to come out, all you need to do is pull the instrument cluster and move it to the side. The locking pin is accessible with a screwdriver in between the steering column and the under-dash cover.
For all future ignition lock troubles: Don't automatically assume it's the lock cylinder. And your second guess, the switch, is not necessarily the culprit, either.
