97 300D power failure...

My 300D has recently started to die for no apparent reason. This has happened while stopped at lights and while driving on the freeway. The car acts like it was just turned off, cycles through all the error codes and then if you wait 2-3 minutes, starts back up and runs like nothing happened. Both mechanics I have tried said they cannot do anything until it dies completely. It also has started having some problem with the glow plugs where the light on the dash doesn't come on, the car cranks but won't start but then the light will come on again after turning the key on and off about 20 times (that was the mechanics suggestion so I could get it started and drive it to the shop...) Any thoughts or suggestions? My 300D has started randomly dying while the car is running, both at idle and while at road speed. After it dies, it cycles through all of the error codes and after 2-3 minutes will start back up and run with no problems. If you try immediately, the glow plug light on the dash does not come on and the car will turn over but not start. The gp light not coming on has happened separately as well. Anyone heard of this happening or have any thoughts on the probable cause? Both service shops I have talked to said I have to wait until it dies completely.
