On W123's the "grey" grill will match the headlight surround nicely, however over time the grill becomes a washed out light grey. Black stands out too much and doesn't really match anything.... maybe a grill surround and grill painted black on a black car (or another darker color).
This looks good for a black grill (forget the rest of the car if it's not your style):
