The easiest check is to remove the tumbler and turn the key with it in your hand. If the tumbler feels glitchy, replace it. I have had the actual lock assembly fail where the electrical portion of the switch connects to main assembly. Actually, I had removed the tumbler to replace the lock assembly when I noticed the tumbler needed to be replaced as well.
