Not commenting on how they got there...
I have to familiarize myself with "scrap yards." I don't think there are any pick a part yards within 100 miles of me, if there even are any here in the New York/New England area. There are many yards in the metropolitan New York/New Jersey area about 80 miles away. And I don't imagine I'd have the luxury of walking the yard to see what they have. To get it up to snuff, I've had to replace many parts on the '87 300TD where new parts made sense. But it's getting to the point where much of the remaining fixing could be done with used parts.
